Conservative vs Aggressive PID Tuning in HVAC

One of the most important tuning decisions in HVAC systems is whether to start conservatively or aggressively. In most comfort applications, conservative tuning produces better long-term results.

Aggressive Tuning

  • Fast response
  • Higher risk of overshoot
  • Increased hunting and callbacks

Conservative Tuning

  • Slower response
  • Greater stability
  • Fewer comfort complaints

Field Reality

Most HVAC systems perform better when tuned conservatively and adjusted gradually. Stability almost always outweighs speed in comfort-driven control.
